Balsam poplar in a common tree in northern coniferous and northern prairie regions, especially along streams and lakeshores, and in aspen parklands habitats. It grows on moist to wet, mineral or peaty soil. The leaves and buds are rusty colored owing to the fragrant resin it produces.
